Authorities issued an all-points bulletin Tuesday for an armed Bexar County Jail inmate who escaped from a downtown hospital and tied up a woman during a home invasion, law enforcement officials said. Jimmy Ray Gorman was scheduled to receive medical treatment when he escaped through a first-floor window of the University Health Center at 11 a.m., Bexar County Sheriff's officials said. A deputy was waiting by the door as he allowed Gorman to use the bathroom alone. 'When he wouldn't open the door, the officer forced the door open,' said Deputy Chief Amadeo Ortiz of the Bexar County Sheriff's Department. '(He) discovered that the inmate had gone out through a window.' Gorman left behind a pair of crutches, a leg brace, and his orange Bexar County Jail jump suit, Ortiz said. Moments later, the suspect ran across Interstate 35 and allegedly stole a pickup at nearby Fox Tech High School. He then drove to a Southwest Side home at 1:30 p.m. where he allegedly tied up a woman and demanded the combination to a safe, Ortiz said. The suspect, who was in custody since December 2001 for aggravated robbery, felony possession of a firearm, and a parole violation, allegedly stole a rifle and the woman's 2001 Toyota Camry during the home invasion, authorities said. The home invasion occurred at the home of a relative who had been in jail with Gorman, authorities said. Ortiz said Gorman may have been planning his escape and used the physical therapy appointment to make his getaway. 'We suspect that he may not have been ill at all, Ortiz added. 'He was just acting.' Gorman is a white male believed to be in his mid-30s, about 6-foot-4 and weighs 260 pounds. |
