Federal judges have stayed the executions of two convicted killers on Pennsylvania's death row. The rulings issued recently mark the third time that Edward Bracey, who was convicted and sentenced to death in 1992 for killing a Philadelphia police officer, has had his execution postponed. Two earlier death warrants were also canceled by court action. Bracey's execution was scheduled for July 11. In a separate U.S. District Court order, the scheduled Aug. 1 execution of Jonathan Fisher was also postponed. Fisher was convicted and sentenced to death in 1999 for the shooting death of Quentin Neal, who allegedly cheated in a drug deal. He fled to New Jersey after the July 18, 1998, shooting and was arrested in Newark, where he had been living under an alias, nearly 10 months later. Gov. Mark S. Schweiker had signed death warrants for Bracey on May 16 and for Fisher on June 10. |
