Defense attorney Richard McCague told police that an 'unknown female' gave him contraband tobacco to pass on to a client he was visiting recently at the Allegheny County Jail, according to the affidavit supporting his arrest. Authorities said McCague hid the three packages of tobacco -- one inside each sock and the third in his waistband behind his belt buckle -- although he knew full well that tobacco products are outlawed in the jail. McCague claimed, however, that he knew nothing about the 10 grams of marijuana found inside the package in his waistband, the affidavit said. Jail officers stopped McCague around 4:30 p.m. on June 16 as he tried to enter the facility to visit client Germaine Cook, who is charged with kidnapping a University of Pittsburgh student in January. Although McCague works for the public defender's office, he represented Cook privately. McCague will be suspended without pay, pending the outcome of his criminal case. |
