Inmate Shot By Officer at Attica

An inmate involved in a fight at Attica Correctional Facility was shot in the buttocks by a correctional officer, a spokesman for the state's prison system said Thursday.
Rodney Littles, 37, was undergoing surgery at Erie County Medical Center Thursday morning to remove bullet fragments, state Department of Correctional Services spokesman James Flateau said. The injuries were not life threatening.
Littles, who is serving seven to 14 years on rape, sex abuse and robbery charges out of Brooklyn, and another unidentified inmate were fighting in the prison yard Wednesday night at around 9:25 p.m., he said. There were about 180 inmates in the prison yard.
''The officer in the tower directed the inmates to stop and, of course, they did not,'' Flateau said. A warning shot was fired, but Flateau said that was ignored. Two gas canisters were released to disperse inmates, but that was ignored as well, he said.
Flateau said another officer in a second tower then fired a round from an AR-15 rifle and struck Littles.
Following the shooting, prisoners in all four recreation yards were returned to their cells. The inmates in the yard where the fight took place were returned last and were back inside by 12:15 a.m. Thursday. A homemade knife was recovered from the yard, Flateau said.
Flateau said the prison was operating normally Thursday, and investigations by state police and the prison system's inspector general are being conducted.
The other inmate involved in the fight was being held in disciplinary housing. The officers were relieved of their duties in the towers until the investigation into the shooting is completed, which is standard procedure, Flateau said. They are still being paid and are working, he said.
The last time a officer shot a prisoner at Attica was in 1984, in which an inmate was struck in the arm as he held a baseball bat he was using to assault a fellow inmate, Flateau said.
