An inmate being held in Erie County jail for walking naked up and down a Buffalo street died after running headfirst into his cell bars.
Michael Bennett, 28, of Buffalo, died Friday night at Erie County Medical Center, shortly after he collapsed while struggling with deputies trying to restrain him, reported The Buffalo News on Sunday.
A deputy called for assistance about 6 p.m. after Bennett began acting irrationally, Holding Center Superintendent H. McCarthy Gipson said.
''He started jumping off his bunk into the bars headfirst,'' he said.
Deputies struggled with Bennett as they took him from his cell and put him in isolation. They handcuffed him to a bunk while waiting for an ambulance, then struggled with him again after removing the handcuffs.
''He just keeled over and went into cardiac arrest,'' Gipson said.
Sheriff's Department officials await the results of an autopsy to determine why he died.
Buffalo police arrested Bennett Tuesday night and charged him with exposure and resisting arrest. He was being held without bail.
