| Indiana Inmates Say Officers Forced Sex |

At least four officers at the Indiana Women's Prison were suspended after allegations surfaced that they forced female inmates to have sex with them, state officials said recently. Investigators said three women, who were not identified, have come forward with similar claims that they were intimidated into performing sex acts -- including oral sex and intercourse -- with male officers earlier this year. Although few details were released, authorities said at least four unidentified officers have been suspended without pay and another has resigned after the allegations. State Police investigators are looking into the reports at the prison. The results of the investigation will be handed over to a Marion County Prosecutor this week to determine whether the men should face criminal charges. According to a detective, the investigation was launched May 20 after one inmate reported she was intimidated into having sex with an officer. Around the same time, another inmate wrote an anonymous letter detailing how she had witnessed the improper sexual relations, Wilson said. During a subsequent inspection of the facility, which typically holds about 300 women prisoners, state officials said two other inmates came forward with nearly identical allegations. The head of the Indiana Department of Correction, Commissioner Evelyn Ridley-Turner, was only recently made aware of the allegations. 'There were four or five officers that were suspended involving sexual relations,' she told The Star on Friday evening. '(Inmates) are incapable of consenting to sex while incarcerated . . . and no one has the right to treat them that way,' she said. Under Indiana law, it is a felony for a prison officer to have sexual relations with an inmate. If convicted, each of the men would face up to 11/2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. |
