A Romanian prison where the late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu spent part of his youth will be turned into a hotel, officials said. Workers have begun repairing the prison, and the town of Telega, about 60 miles northwest of Bucharest, is looking for investors to finance the project. Officials in Telega said they hope the notoriety of the Doftana prison's one-time inmate will attract tourists, the private news agency Mediafax reported. Local Mayor Alexandru Chirobocea said tourists will be able to spend the night in prison cells. A disco will also be built near the prison. 'Foreign tourists will come to stay in the prison, just like they do in other countries,' Chirobocea was quoted as saying by Mediafax. A night's stay will cost about $100. Ceausescu was imprisoned at Doftana from 1936-38, while in his teens, for spreading communist propaganda. He was executed at age 71 during the anti-communist revolt in 1989 after 25 years of authoritarian rule. Under Ceausescu, the prison was transformed into a museum where children took school trips to see where he had been imprisoned by the 'evil capitalists.' |
