N.H. Prison Trainers Leave After Sex Investigation

Three state prison training officers accused of having sex with women they were training said they have resigned because of the investigation.
A Corrections Department spokesman said the men had been suspended with pay, but declined to confirm whether they were ultimately fired or resigned.
The men would not comment on the allegations, except to say they were fabricated.
Meanwhile, the Police Standards and Training Council, which prepared and certifies new prison employees, has expanded its rule against staff-trainee fraternization to explicitly include outside agency instructors. The three trainers were outside instructors because they worked for the Corrections Department, not the council.
Corrections spokesman Jeff Lyons told the Concord Monitor the trainers were suspended with pay last month following an investigation into possible inappropriate conduct.
Lyons would not say whether the men resigned, retired or negotiated a resignation, the three ways departures are recorded at the department.
They were ''removed from the department,'' Lyons said. ''Let's leave it at that.''
Matthew Wingren, one of the men, said he resigned. ''I made a decision I wasn't going to play, and I resigned,'' he said.
The other men, Daniel Smith and Timothy Marquis, concurred.
''They pushed us to where we didn't want to put up with it anymore,'' Smith said.
Fraternization between trainers and trainees is frowned upon, said Earl Sweeney, the director of the training council.
''The question is whether someone is in a position of power, that's what matters here,'' Sweeney said.
He said he was unaware of a similar investigation in the 17 years he has been with the department.
