To save $1 million, the state of Connecticut will close down all of its drug courts, the Associated Press reported. The courts, which offered drug offenders in four cities the opportunity to seek addiction treatment rather than prison, will close down on Aug. 1. About 170 people now involved in the program will be transferred to the regular prison system. Joseph Pellegrino, chief administrator for the state's court system, said that in the face of a budget crisis, the goal has become avoiding layoffs and providing services mandated by Connecticut's constitution. He added that drug courts 'many not be as successful as we may have thought.' Officials described drug courts as more costly and labor-intensive than other courts. Supporters of Connecticut's drug courts insisted that the program has been effective and predicted crime would increase if the programs are cut. |
