Inmate Appears On 26-Year-Old Murder Charge
By KCRA
Published: 08/05/2002

Ollie George was murdered more than two decades ago. Her suspected killer was caught just this month. And while the 26-year wait sounds like a long time, detectives say that the arrest came just in time.
The man accused in the rape and murder of 19-year-old college student Ollie George appeared before a judge in a Sacramento County courtroom Wednesday afternoon -- just one day before he was scheduled to be released from Folsom Prison.
Because of newfound DNA evidence, on Aug. 1, Dennis Nelson, 46, will be facing a murder charge instead of going free.
Nelson Wednesday asked the judge for more time to find his own attorney.
'I need a week, about a week more,' Nelson said.
In February of 1976, George's car broke down in a Sacramento parking lot. Her body was found three days later in a Sacramento County ditch.
In a press conference last week, authorities said that it was DNA technology that linked them to Nelson, who was serving time for rape and attempted rape.
They believe if he were to be released Aug. 1, his scheduled release date, he would rape again.
The George family saw the face of the man for the first time Wednesday.
'I was devastated. My family, right now, is very devastated. We appreciate the Sheriff's Department reopening the case and actually finding the man who raped and murdered our sister. However, right now, we're just devastated, because we're dealing with the grief all over again,' said Ollie's sister, Laurenda George.
The case has been continued until next week to give Nelson time to retain an attorney. If he doesn't, one will be appointed. Nelson is due back in court Wednesday morning.
