Mississippi Corrections Chief Resigns

Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Robert Johnson resigned August 12 from the position he has held since April 2000.
Johnson, 54, said he's leaving to pursue an undisclosed job opportunity in the public safety sector, and he said his decision to leave was a difficult one.
'I have enjoyed my tenure here with the Department of Corrections, especially working for Gov. Ronnie Musgrove. He is a person dedicated to good correctional policy in this state,' Johnson said at his announcement at the state Capitol.
Johnson's last day on the $85,000-a-year job is Aug. 30. His departure comes as he and Musgrove are embroiled in legal battles as well as a stand-off with the
state Legislature over closing the Delta Correctional Facility in Greenwood. The governor also renegotiated lower per-inmate, per-day rates with four private
prisons in efforts to save the state money.
Johnson, who made his decision a couple weeks ago, said the political wranglings that accompany his job was a factor. Musgrove praised Johnson's leadership during his service, and he said he's disappointed to see Johnson leave.
He said. 'It will be Mississippi's loss that Robert Johnson is taking this position, but it will be a gain for the entity that gets him. I am proud of the work he has done while he's been here.'
