Sacramento County authorities say they've found the man responsible for the murder of a young woman almost 30 years ago, and they are giving the credit to DNA technology. For more than 23 years, the murder case of Carmichael resident Sharon Marie Wilcoxson had grown cold. Now, the district attorney says DNA evidence has revealed her killer and brought peace of mind to her family. 'We have now charged Willie B. Thomas for the murder of S. Wilcoxson,' Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully. Wilcoxson was found dead in her home Dec. 31,1978. The 21-year-old was stabbed and sexually assaulted. Thomas was considered the prime suspect at the time. Wilcoxson's sister, Linda Thompson, says that her sister, a waitress heading back to college, didn't know the suspect. The news of his arrest decades later was a shock. 'When you don't make an arrest, you second guess what's going on. And you live with that for your whole life. I was nervous, excited, upset, happy. And all of those emotions ran through me,' Thompson said. Thomas is currently serving a life sentence for a 1981 murder. |
