Officers Say Kennedy Kin Getting Special Privileges in Prison

Officers at the prison where Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel is awaiting sentencing for murder are complaining that he is getting special treatment, The Hartford Courant reported August 16.
Guards at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown allege Skakel has been allowed to bypass weeks-long waiting lists for treatment programs, was permitted an unusual visit with cousin Robert Kennedy Jr., and was granted use of a staff bathroom.
Skakel, 41, was convicted June 7 of murdering Martha Moxley in 1975 when they were 15-year-old neighbors in Greenwich.
''We are outraged that a convicted murderer is shown special treatment and that the Moxley family is again victimized,'' Tom Sellas, a state correction officers union official, told the Courant.
State Department of Correction officials deny that Skakel is getting special treatment.
Skakel, who was quickly approved for substance abuse treatment and enrichment programs, is housed in a mental health ward and has his own cell.
Sellas said Skakel was allowed the visit from Kennedy even though he was not allowed to have social visits at the time. Oien said lawyers handling Skakel's appeal notified the Correction Department that Kennedy is helping with Skakel's case.
