| Ohio Jailers Set Convicted Felon Free |

A day after Boone County, Ky., jailers thwarted a possible escape attempt, they found themselves trying to explain how an Ohio convict who still had 15 years to serve on his prison sentence could have been released. When Boone County charges were dropped August 13 against Brian Gribbins, instead of being returned to Ohio, where he is serving a 3-to-15-year prison sentence, he was set free. Gribbins, 26, was free for more than a day before being arrested again, said a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. She said she had no information about where Gribbins was apprehended or by whom. Gribbins was sent to prison in March by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Dennis Helmig after pleading guilty to theft. That conviction caused Gribbins to violate his probation from his 1995 convictions for using a gun to commit felonious assault, theft, aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation. The probation violation resulted in him being returned to prison to serve his original sentence of 3 to 15 years. Since March, Gribbins has been housed at Noble Correctional Institute in Caldwell, in northern Ohio. He was picked up from Noble earlier this week by Boone County deputies and returned to Boone County to answer to charges of shoplifting and failure to appear at an earlier court hearing. When those charges were dismissed, officials said they had no paperwork ordering Gribbins held on other charges. On Monday, jail officials say, they thwarted an escape attempt when a deputy jailer discovered four inmates trying to remove a cinder block from their cell wall by gouging out the grout that held the block in place. |
