CCA Officer Receives Medal of Valor from NAAWS
By CCA
Published: 08/26/2002

Senior Correctional Officer Paul Lee Jones of CCA's South Central Correctional Center (SCCC) in Clifton, Tennessee was awarded the Award of Valor by the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents (NAAWS) during a ceremony at the American Correctional Association's (ACA) summer conference in August. The presentation of the Award of Valor to Jones marks the first time that a corrections professional from the private sector has been honored with the NAAWS award.
Jones, an employee at SCCC since June 1997, was honored for his role in helping to contain a disturbance at the facility in July 2001. Though wounded in the incident, he restored order and remained in the area to lock down 128 inmates and protect a fellow officer who also had been wounded. At the conclusion of the incident and after being admitted to the local hospital for treatment, Jones called the facility to assure that his coworkers were all right and to confirm that his actions were appropriate.
'Senior Jones is an exemplary corrections professional,' says SCCC Warden Kevin Myers. 'He consistently displays a commitment to CCA and to excellent performance, in his daily duties as well as in times of heightened security. He has shown great courage, professionalism and dedication.' Jones was honored for his heroic efforts earlier this year as the first annual recipient of CCA's Presidential Award of Merit.
'Correctional officers are the backbone of our business - they put their safety at risk each day to protect others: inmates, fellow staff members, and the community,' says Jimmy Turner, Vice President, Operations for CCA. 'We are proud of Senior Jones' accomplishment - it is a noteworthy achievement on an individual level, and testifies to the professionalism of all our correctional officers throughout the company. CCA has always asserted that correctional officers should be recognized for the important service they provide, regardless of their affiliation with either public or private sector. As the first private sector employee to win this award, Senior Jones' achievement bridges the barrier that is sometimes perceived between the public and private sector. All correctional officers provide an important public service, and should be judged on the merits of their professionalism.'
NAAWS is a professional organization comprised of public and private sector wardens and administrators throughout the United States and Canada.
