Police are investigating the death of an inmate found hanging in his cell at Oahu Community Correctional Center last weekend. Police said his death is 'suspicious.' Inmate Byron Almeida was found hanging in his cell. His hands had been bound, officials said. While prison officials admit it's unusual for someone to bind their own hands, they believe Almeida took his own life. Almeida, 30, was arrested in June on charges of assaulting two police officers. The arrest came just one week after he served 10 years in prison for robbery. Almeida was taken to OCCC to await trial. On August 17, Almeida was found hanging in his cell by another inmate. Prison officials said it was suicide, even though his hands had been fastened together with cut sheets. 'It wouldn't be unusual that a person would be able to fasten his own from cut sheets or anything or a T-shirt and bound his own hands,' OCCC Warden Clayton Frank said. 'Well sometimes, I'm only making an assumption, sometimes people would have an opportunity to grab, or have a second thought or change their minds.' Frank also pointed to a letter he said Almeida wrote to his girlfriend. He said thoughts of suicide were evident. 'Basically he had indicated it was 'time for him to be free.' He didn't use the exact words that he was going to take his life,' Frank said. While the warden said he has no doubt Almeida's death was a suicide, he said it will be up to police to make the final determination. |
