Bush proposes funding to help released inmates reenter society
By Associated Press
Published: 01/21/2004

President Bush last night during the State of the Union address proposed help for inmates who are released from prison back into society.
He says some 600,000 inmates will be released this year alone. And he says it's a fact that if they can't find work, or a home, they are much more likely to return to a life of crime -- and prison.
To help them, the president is proposing a four-year, 300 million-dollar Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative to expand job training and placement services, provide transitional housing and offer mentoring.
The president says America is the "land of the second chance," and that when the prison gate opens, "the path ahead should lead to a better life."
