Oklahoma Correctional Officer Found Guilty of Rape

A former Turley Correctional Center employee pleaded no contest to a charge of raping a female inmate there.
Sentencing for Thomas Edward Hawkins, 23, is set for Oct. 29.
Tulsa County District Judge Linda Morrissey found Hawkins guilty of second-degree rape and ordered him to perform 80 hours of community service prior to sentencing.
Assistant District Attorney Bret Sanders recommended a seven-year term, and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections will conduct a background investigation to evaluate Hawkins as a candidate for probation. He has been free on bail for more than nine months.
Hawkins was charged in November with raping an inmate in March 2001 at the correctional center.
The inmate, now 26, is currently at the Warrior Correctional Center in Taft, where she is serving time for Bryan County forgery offenses, records show.
The rape charge did not allege that Hawkins forcibly had sex with the woman, and the law does not require proof of force in this type of case.
It is illegal for an officer or jailer to have sexual contact -- consensual or not -- with an inmate or prisoner, prosecutors said.
Hawkins is no longer employed at the Turley Correctional Center, a halfway house owned by the private Avalon Correctional Services Inc.
