An officer at the federal prison at Fort Dix has been charged with taking money to smuggle prohibited items, such as a cell phone and food, to inmates. Sandra Jernigan was arrested last week at the Jersey Gardens shopping mall in Elizabeth, N.J. by agents of the Department of Justice's Office of Inspector General following a sting operation that utilized an inmate as an informant. Agents learned from that inmate that another inmate, Christopher Barnes, was able to get contraband from Jernigan, according to court papers filed by the office. In August, Barnes told the informant to have someone send $500 and a cell phone to Jernigan at her Irvington address. The money and phone were delivered to her there by an undercover agent on Aug. 19, and the informant got the phone from Barnes on Aug. 25, the court document said. This month, the informant told an agent that Jernigan had agreed to smuggle food and bodybuilding supplements into the prison for $850. They arranged to have her meet the undercover agent at the mall on Sept. 4. The agent gave her $850 and three packages of food and supplements, the document said. The meeting was recorded on videotape and audiotape. Last Tuesday, Jernigan agreed to smuggle more items for $1,000. She initially balked at having marijuana in the delivery, but agreed if the drug was hidden in the food, the court paper said. During a recorded meeting outside the mall that evening, the agent gave Jernigan $1,000 and the packages, which included three small packages that resembled 2 ounces of marijuana, the complaint said. She was then arrested. Jernigan is charged with violating her official duty in return for a bribe, which carries up to 15 years in prison. |
