Police Thwart Inmate's Plan for Explosion at Tenn. Jail

The Crockett County Jail in Alamo remained on full lockdown recently after authorities thwarted a jailbreak conspiracy Tuesday night.
Crockett County Sheriff Troy N. Klyce said the high-tension incident at the jail some 75 miles northeast of Memphis began about three weeks ago. That's when jailers found a door to a recreation area jammed in an attempted jail escape and began monitoring the telephone calls of the inmate they suspected.
On Tuesday, they overheard calls placed from a Haywood County address that indicated a jail break, using dynamite, would occur at about 8 Tuesday night.
'Dynamite and explosives were mentioned; 'blowing the place all to hell,' that was his words,'' Klyce said of the outside caller, later identified as Ricky Earl Davis Jr., 27.
Klyce placed the jail on red alert and full lockdown, and placed snipers on the roof. He also called for help from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Bells and Alamo police departments. Ultimately, more than 60 officers were involved.
Undercover officers placed the Haywood County home under surveillance. When Davis and a woman got into her Dodge Intrepid and drove away from the house just after dark, the officers followed.
But the driver of the Intrepid suddenly pulled over, and the officers were forced to confront its occupants. Davis was arrested. The owner of the car was detained and questioned, but will not be charged, Klyce said.
'The plan was to use her car but I don't think she was cooperating,' Klyce said.
A search of the car revealed no explosives, Klyce said, but authorities believe Davis planned to pick up some explosives on his way to the jail.
After discussing the case with prosecutors, Klyce said Davis was charged under the prohibited weapons statute and with conspiring to attempt a jail escape. Additional charges are possible.
The man inside the jail accused of plotting to escape was identified as James McKinley Moore, 26, who was in jail for possession of marijuana and a parole violation and is wanted in both Weakley and Gibson counties in connection with methamphetamine labs.
Moore also was charged with conspiracy to attempt a jail escape. Both men are being held in solitary confinement and are to appear in court today.
