Angel Roldan is back in the state prison after a brief taste of freedom. The 22-year-old escaped from a minimum security unit in Concord at 3:40 p.m. Sunday. Officials said an inmate, Louis Alvarez, told a woman visiting another, unidentified inmate to drive slowly around the back of the minimum-security unit when she left so someone could jump in her car. The visitor, Taina Almestica, 18, did as she was instructed and Roldan jumped in through the car window, then told Almestica to speed off, authorities said. A prison officer tried to stop the car, but couldn't. State police stopped the car about 10 minutes later on Interstate 93 southbound. Roldan was found hiding on the floor in the back seat, under a blanket, a baby bag and a stroller. Roldan, formerly of Nashua, was convicted in June of trafficking in cocaine, crack and Ecstasy. He also was convicted of leading a drug ring. Those charges carry a 25-years-to-life sentence under the state's ''drug kingpin'' law. Roldan will be charged with escape, authorities said. Almestica was charged with hindering arrest and released on $25,000 bail. Her 4-month-old daughter was sleeping on the car's back seat, unrestrained, during the escape, authorities said. The baby was turned over to the custody of family members. Officials said more charges are expected. |
