N.H. Sheriff upset inmates being housed in county offices

The Carroll County attorney is outraged that two women inmates have been moved from the county jail into vacant offices in his building, which also houses the state Department of Probation.
''This is a ridiculous situation. They need to be in a correction facility, not a business office,'' County Attorney Robin Gordon told The Union Leader.
The women were moved because of overcrowding at the county jail. The jail, built in the late 1800s to hold about 30 inmates, now houses 50, county officials said.
Gordon and Sheriff Scott Carr said the presence of the women in the building poses a serious risk because confidential files are stored there behind doors with flimsy locks.
Victims also sometimes come to the building for interviews, Gordon said.
''This isn't a boarding house. We can't have people we prosecute staying in this building. It's not a secure facility,'' Gordon said.
County officials defended the decision, saying the women presented a minimal threat.
The women are both being held for probation violations. One was originally convicted of writing bad checks, while the other was sentenced for identity fraud. One will probably be released this week with electronic monitoring, he said.
County commissioners said they approved the move because sending the women elsewhere would have cost the taxpayers money.
''We absolutely needed the space and we trusted the judgment of the experts who deal with these women every day,'' said Commissioner Marge Webster. ''It's not ideal, but there's no other alternative.''
The county is building a new, $8 million jail, which is expected to be completed next summer.
