Gas Leak Forces Evacuation of Prison Dorms

A natural gas leak late Sunday forced Utah State Prison officials to evacuate 250 medium security prisoners from their Point of the Mountain dorms.
A line broke on the east side of the Oquirrh Five dorms near a vent at about 9:55 p.m., said Warden Clint Friel. When the smell started to get stronger, officers moved the prisoners to the gym.
'It was quite a chore,' said Friel.
Many of the prisoners were already asleep at the time. Officials had to pull officers from other areas of the prison to help watch prisoners as they sat on the gym floor.
Salt Lake County firefighters identified the leak and provided some ventilation to the building, while Questar workers arrived to fix the break.
The Oquirrh dorm building is one of the oldest on the complex and houses prisoners who are 'pretty manageable,' Friel said.
'The inmates have been very cooperative,' he said. 'They understand what is going on, that it is for their benefit. We have had no problems whatsoever.'
