Michigan DOC Director Won't Reduce Inmates at Prison Camp

Michigan Department of Corrections Director William Overton will not consider a reduction in the amount of female inmates at Camp Brighton; however, he has agreed to delay the November start date of a $10.7 million expansion of the correctional facility.
The announcement from DOC spokesperson Gail Light came shortly after Overton met with three Hamburg Township officials October 2 at his Lansing office.
Light said Overton 'promised' to consider alternatives to expansion and would announce a final decision prior to the holiday season as to whether the project will move forward as planned.
When asked about what types of alternatives to expansion would be considered, Light responded, 'That's what we've got to figure out.'
According to Light, Hamburg officials used their time with the DOC to air a list of concerns that have worried residents about the camp itself and the proposed expansion.
Light said the DOC will consider reducing the noise level from the intercom that residents say is disturbing, and new considerations for lighting and signage also will be discussed with the facility's community liaison group consisting of local law enforcement officials, local elected representatives from the village of Pinckney, Hamburg and Putnam townships, as well as local state legislators.
'Our staff is going to discuss ways to ameliorate those concerns,' Light said.
Light also said the DOC has investigated a complaint made by residents that there were prisoners being detained at the camp beyond security Level 1, which generally is reserved for inmates with good behavior records or who are nearing the end of their sentences.
According to Light, the information that appeared on the Michigan Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) indicating Level 4 inmates at the facility was the result of 'wrong information' being conveyed from the facility's database.
'There were no and there are no Level 4 prisoners in Camp Brighton -- they're all Level 1,' she said.
The number of inmates at Camp Brighton will not be reduced because of the simple need for more beds to accommodate the growing female prison population in Michigan, Light said.
