Malfunctioning landing gear caused a small airplane transporting a prisoner to Florida to make a crash landing at Burke Lakefront Airport Wednesday afternoon, but nobody aboard was injured. One wheel of the landing gear did not retract when the plane took off around 2:40 p.m. from the airport, said Fred Szabo, commissioner of port control. Pilot Nathanial McClain tried air maneuvers to get the landing gear to retract, but failed and decided to make an emergency landing. The plane landed on the grass near the runway. McClain and the passengers - two deputies from Jacksonville, Fla., and a prisoner they had come to pick up - were not hurt. Cleveland police took the prisoner into custody immediately after the crash. The plane was not seriously damaged, fire department dispatcher Dave McCreary said. The airport was closed for a half-hour. It was the first crash at Burke since 1982, Szabo said. |
