An inmate in solitary confinement at the South Bay House of Correction in Boston was hospitalized after he set his sheets on fire in his cell and cut his arms last night, authorities said. Eight officers and a nurse were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation following the 9 p.m. fire in the third-floor disciplinary segregation unit, said Rick Lombardi, spokesman for Suffolk County House of Correction. The inmate had cuts on his arm 'which we believe to be self-inflicted,'' Lombardi said. Lombardi would not identify the prisoner but said he and others had been disruptive earlier in the day. |
