Pennsylvania County Prison Officer Fired
By Doylestown Intelligencer
Published: 10/17/2002

Bucks County Prison officials on Tuesday fired an officer who was accused by an inmate of giving a hacksaw blade to the inmate, who then used it to try to break out of the jail in Doylestown Township.
The officer did not appear at a disciplinary hearing that had been set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, county spokesman Ron Watson confirmed. The officer reportedly had been planning to submit a letter of resignation, but never did so, Watson said.
'So, we're going to terminate him,' Watson said.
Harris Gubernick, the director of corrections, fired the officer Tuesday afternoon, Watson said.
Department heads generally have latitude in hirings and firings, but the county commissioners must formally approve each action.
Commissioners said they had not yet been notified of Gubernick's action. The firing may be on the agenda for today's commissioners meeting.
The commissioners and their lawyer, Guy Matthews, would not name the officer, saying they had no formal word that he had, in fact, been fired. They also would not commit to naming the person after he officially has been fired.
The person has been on administrative leave - with pay - for weeks since the late August incident in which an anonymous caller pointed prison officials to two inmates allegedly trying to escape. A search of the men's cell found a hacksaw blade hidden in a bed frame and a damaged wall behind the bed where the inmates had used the blade to cut into a window frame and remove mortar from the wall.
After three days in solitary confinement, one of the inmates told jail officials an officer had given him the blade.
The officer has not been charged with a crime. Bucks County District Attorney Diane Gibbons earlier this month said she did not have enough evidence to prosecute, and the inmate's word against the officer's was not enough.
