The recent death of convicted killer Gregory Gueths was ruled a suicide, Columbia County, Wisc., Coroner Marc Playman announced October 10. Gueths, 17, intentionally ingested a large amount of acetaminophen, which led to massive chemical liver injury and death. There was sufficient evidence, Playman said, 'of self-authored writings by Mr. Gueths to support a finding of suicide.' Gueths died at a Madison hospital after intentionally ingesting at least 50 Tylenol tablets while he was a prisoner at the Columbia Correctional Institution, Playman said. Officials said Gueths bought the tablets at the prison infirmary. The body has been released to a Madison area funeral home pending arrangements. Meanwhile, the state Department of Corrections is reviewing its policy of selling large amounts of pain relievers at its prison infirmaries. Corrections spokesman Bill Clausius said the department will review its policies in light of Gueths' death. Gueths was serving a life sentence after pleading no contest to a charge of first-degree intentional homicide in May for the June 2001 death of 17-year-old Emily Fitzgerald. |
