The Connecticut Department of Children and Families is making changes at its troubled Long Lane School for juvenile girls after two state officials criticized the agency for not doing enough to keep youths safe. State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and state Child Advocate Jeanne Milstein scolded Long Lane recently after Milstein's office found several safety problems at the school during an investigation of a 15-year-old girl's suicide attempt Sept. 20. In a report released October 9, DCF said it would make nearly two dozen changes to current practices at Long Lane. The improvements are already in place or will be implemented in the coming weeks, the agency said. Changes include locking sharp objects in a cabinet inside a secure staff office, disposing of sharp objects such as razors more frequently, improving staff supervision and developing a more extensive recreation plan for students. Other changes include creating a point system to reward students for good behavior, asking staff to recognize warning signs of troubled students, better keeping of records on restraint use and safety watches, and posting fire evacuation plans in clear view. Blumenthal said he would evaluate the changes with Milstein. |
