A federal prisoner being held in the Portsmouth, Va., jail died early October 6 in an apparent suicide, officials said. Officers found Dan Allen Stapleford, 44, in his cell at 12:10 a.m., said Lisa White, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department. He had hanged himself, she said. Officers had last checked on him nine minutes before, she said. Officers administered CPR and medics arrived at 12:18 a.m., White said. Stapleford was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. Stapleford was arrested and appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Norfolk two days earlier. A warrant on file in Greenville, S.C., federal court charged him with threatening to injure a person. Stapleford was to appear again October 8 in Norfolk's federal court for a hearing about his possible transfer to South Carolina. The police and sheriff's departments are investigating the death, White said. |
