Four Northeast Correctional Facility officers received the Tennessee Department of Correction's Medal of Valor October 8 for rescuing two motorists involved in potentially fatal auto accidents just outside the prison. DOC Commissioner Donal Campbell presented the department's highest honor to Sgt. Shannon Clark and corrections officers Ed Walker, Walter Vines and David Barnes. Clark received the medal for her quick work in single-handedly removing an elderly motorist from a burning automobile following a car crash on prison property in October 2001. Walker, Vines and Barnes received medals for pulling a woman from an automobile that veered into a pond on prison property in January. The Medal of Valor is reserved for those who, of their own volition, exhibit bravery, self-sacrifice and extraordinary heroism in saving a life or preventing serious injury to another person. Actions meriting the medal must be 'so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish an individual above his or her colleagues.' Campbell thanked each of the officers for their actions and presented them certificates, medallions and ribbon bars recognizing their valor. |
