The sheriff explained because the 54-year-old inmate, who is being held for insurance fraud, is considered a flight risk, the medical procedure must be covered by the county for the time being and that the county could pursue collections later. However, considering the circumstances, McBride did not express much hope for that because the inmate faces a possible 10-year sentence and a $50,000 fine. 'This is why we have to have contingency funds,' observed commissioner Ken Glasser. 'These things don't get dropped on the townships.' Hayes Township Supervisor Mary Sanders took strong exception to that comment, explaining that townships, too, have various unexpected financial outlays. In a related matter, Equalization Director William Kerr, while submitting admittedly incomplete millage reports to the board as required by the state - the final millage levels will not be known until after November's general election - invited commissioners to come to his office to observe his office's functions. 'I would really like the commissioners to come in and talk,' Kerr said, referring to a proposed budget cut that would eliminate one assessor from his staff. 'I would only like the opportunity to show you what it is we do.' |
