A New Jersey man has filed suit in U.S. District Court accusing his supervisor at South Woods State Prison of gender discrimination. John DiTullio -- who started working at the Bridgeton prison as an electrician in 1997 -- claims his supervisor, Thomas Sposato, twice promoted an unqualified female colleague with whom Sposato was romantically involved. The promotions to senior repairer and eventually to interim planner/scheduler gave the woman a salary $5,500 a year higher than that earned by other more qualified employees, the suit says. Because the woman did not possess the knowledge needed to hold the position, other supervisors had to perform their own planning and scheduling, and outside contractors had to set up computerized maintenance schedules, the suit says. DiTullio also claims Sposato showed preferential treatment to the woman, including: * Providing her with a private office. * Not requiring her to perform repair work. * Not requiring her to wear steel-tipped shoes. * Not reprimanding her for showing up late. Sposato could not be reached for comment. Calls to the prison were directed to the N.J. Department of Corrections' Public Information Office. Deirdre Fedkenheuer, a DOC spokeswoman, said it is department policy not to comment on litigation. DiTullio seeks lost pay and benefits, as well as compensation for mental anguish, emotional distress, and pain and suffering. District Court Judge Joseph H. Rodriguez will preside over the trial, which has not been scheduled. |
