Nearly two-thirds of the corrections officers scheduled to work at the state prison Wednesday failed to show up, state officials said. Fifty-one of 82 officers assigned to the men's prison stayed home, prison officials said. A source close to the situation said the officers were protesting a recent decision by Corrections Commissioner Phil Stanley not to promote one of their peers. Stanley's spokesman would not confirm that, but the source said the commissioner was concerned about nepotism because the officer's brother is a major with the department. Department policy prohibits employees from working in the same chain of command as immediate relatives or members of their households. On Wednesday, some inmate programs were suspended, non-uniformed employees were reassigned to officer duty and some off-duty officers were called in to help out, authorities said. The prison was not locked down. ''The security of the institution is not at risk,'' Stanley said. Sgt. Gary Smith, a corrections officer and acting president of the State Employees Association chapter that represents prison employees, said the union did not organize the protest. ''We have had an improved working relationship with the Department of Corrections under Commissioner Stanley and have worked with the department to try to improve the promotion policy,'' he said. He said the policy needs significant improvement and that union officials hope to bring the issue to the bargaining table. |
