Authorities have launched an internal investigation into a weekend incident involving several inmates and jailers at the Laurens County Detention Center. According to Sheriff Ricky Chastain, one of the doors inside a living area which housed about 50 inmates wouldn't close late Friday and a repairman had to be called in. While the door was being repaired, the inmates kept wandering out of their rooms and refused detention officers' commands to stay in the rooms, Chastain said. About 1 a.m. Saturday an officer sprayed pepper spray in an attempt to get the inmates into their rooms. 'After the inmates were sprayed they were let into the rec area and the inmates jammed the door and refused to let two detention officers out,' Chastain said. 'There were five detention officers on duty at the time and they called us.' Chastain said additional deputies were called in and the inmates returned to their rooms without further incident. No one was injured during the incident, he said. 'The scene was secured by about 2:15 a.m.,' Chastain said. Chastain said no policy changes have been made pending the results of the investigation. Three inmates were charged in connection with Saturday's incident. |
