An Indiana death row inmate fatally drove a homemade metal shank into another condemned killer. But despite one firm suspect, so far no one has been charged, said Indiana State Police Detective Tim Isenberg. Jerry Thompson, 41, was stabbed multiple times Sunday afternoon in a recreation area reserved strictly for death row inmates on the prison's first floor. After an officer noticed a large disturbance in progress, the responding officers found the bloodied Thompson on the floor and seven other death row offenders assigned to that location standing nearby, according to ISP officials. The death row offenders were handcuffed without incident and a lockdown was ordered. Thompson was pronounced dead less than an hour later at a local hospital. In addition to one firm suspect, Isenberg said it's possible others were involved, but without eyewitness testimony filing charges and knowing exactly what transpired and why are not possible right now. ''If they gave us some statements we might be able to narrow it down some. Right now, we just don't know,'' he said. In hopes of getting somebody to talk, all of the death row offenders present during the stabbing are being kept in isolation, Isenberg said. More information, including how many stab wounds were inflicted, should be known after today's autopsy, Isenberg said. ISP spokesman Barry Nothstine said Thompson's death was the first fatal attack among death-row inmates in at least 15 years. According to prison officials, Thompson was sentenced to 90-years in 1993 for the murders of an Indianapolis car lot owner and his employee. The convictions were overturned on appeal several years later. He was found guilty again, though, during a retrial and sentenced to death in September 2000, according to prison officials. Thompson's death leaves 37 prisoners on Indiana's death row. |
