The Florida Department of Corrections is changing policy, thanks to a report that aired on the television news last week. On Monday, Channel 10 - WPLG videotaped inmate William Montgomery driving 54 mph in a 30 mph zone. The police report said two other inmates were in the van and they were not supervised. When an officer told Montgomery to sign a speeding ticket, according to the report, Montgomery said, 'What for -- I'm in prison now.' Sen. Alex Villalobos said he was shocked when he heard from reporter Jeff Weinsier that inmates were driving Department of Corrections vans, totally unsupervised. Villalobos said, 'I will file legislation that will prohibits that, that's outrageous... there is no statutory authorization that I can find or my staff can find that would allow them to do that. As far as I'm concerned it's illegal.' Department of Corrections officials said that they have been using inmates as drivers for years, and the department doesn't have enough corrections officers to drive all the inmates on work release to their jobs. However, as a result of the report, the Department of Corrections issued a statement saying that as of October 28, inmates will no longer be allowed to drive the vans. Only corrections officers will be driving them from now on. |
