On November 2, 2002, after six years of work, Congress has finally passed and the President has signed H.R. 2215, the 21st Century Department of Justice Appropriations Authorization Act. This bill reauthorizes the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and maintains the four mandated protections of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act including the deinstitutionalization of status offenders, the separation of juveniles from adults in institutions, the removal of juveniles from jails and adult facilities, and the reduction of the disproportionate representation of minorities in contact with the juvenile justice system. |
