Vincent James Landano, who served 12 years in prison for a crime he was eventually acquitted of, died after suffering a heart attack. Landano, 63, died Monday night at Community Medical Center. He had been hospitalized since the heart attack on Nov. 3. Landano was convicted in 1977 for the murder of Newark police officer John Snow during an armed robbery in Kearny. But he was freed in 1989 after a federal judge reversed the decision, saying some evidence had never been turned over to the defense. Three others, who were members or associates of a Staten Island motorcycle gang, were convicted or pleaded guilty in the murder. Landano was never a member of the gang and said he was not at the Hi-Way Check Cashing store the day Snow was killed. Landano was re-indicted in 1996, but acquitted by a jury two years later. Later, Landano sued the prosecutors and investigators he blamed for his wrongful imprisonment. The case is still pending in federal court in Newark. ''Despite all the hardships he was put through, Jimmy was a man of immense dignity,'' Paul Casteleiro, Landano's attorney at retrial, told The Star-Ledger of Newark. ''He was a proud guy. Proud of everything he'd overcome.'' A native of New York, Landano spent the years after his release from prison living in Manville with his wife. He worked construction jobs. Landano is survived by his wife, two daughters, a brother, two sisters and three grandchildren. |
