One of two corrections officers held hostage by two inmates for nearly a week climbed down from a prison officer tower to safety on Saturday. The officer, who was not immediately identified, was being taken to a hospital, said a Department of Corrections spokeswoman, Cam Hunter. The officer was freed after negotiators delivered an item the inmates demanded, Ms. Hunter said. She did not say what the item was. Negotiators were still working to free the other hostage, who remained with the two inmates in the tower, which was believed to be stocked with weapons. The inmates took the officers hostage early on Jan. 18 at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye, west of Phoenix. The authorities have not released the inmates' identities or said how the inmates got into the tower. The other 4,400 prisoners at the medium- to high-security facility have been locked down. |
