Inmate Tents Cause Uproar in Kentucky County

At least three parties are ready to go to court to stop the Clark County Sheriff's plans to house jail inmates in military-style tents. Jail workers and trustees continued work on the camp today, but a judge's order could stop that work as early as tomorrow.
The sheriff's office says the work must go on to make a temporary place to house overflow inmates, to keep from running against a federal court order. But the idea of a tent camp at the edge of a residential area, and across from a school, keeps drawing criticism and ridicule.
Jeffersonville mayor Tom Galligan calls the camp an embarrassment. The city put 'stop work' orders on the tents last week, but the sheriff's office continued work anyway. The city will go to court to ask a judge to stop the work for ten days. Indiana's state jail inspector is also considering going to court, saying the tents likely would not meet minimum standards for jails.
Clark County commissioners and council members have struggled with various jail space proposals for years. A jail addition plan before them now wouldn't offer relief for two to three years. And time is just one obstacle. Money is another. County finances are extremely tight.
Other county jails won't take Clark County inmates because they're also full.
