An inmate serving a life sentence at state Correctional Institution at Greene pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Clarence Edward Coleman, 34, who is serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in Allegheny County, pleaded guilty before Greene County Court Judge H. Terry Grimes. Coleman was scheduled to go to trial on the charges Tuesday morning, but then entered the guilty plea. A charge of contraband involving a controlled substance was withdrawn. Coleman was sentenced to 3 to 6 months in prison and fined $100. Coleman was arrested Aug. 12, 2001, after a woman passed him six balloons filled with marijuana in the prison visiting room. The woman, Noreen Renee Harris, 44, of 1507 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh pleaded no contest to possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance. Harris was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $100. |
