The family of a schizophrenic Hartford man who was killed in a state prison has sued the state for medical malpractice. The estate of Bryant Wiseman, 28, said Monday that the state prison system failed to properly treat and care for his schizophrenia. Wiseman was killed in November 1999 at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown when prison officers tried to restrain him. The 50-page lawsuit, filed in Hartford Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages against state prison officials, prison officers and prison health care workers. The state Department of Correction said it will not comment on pending litigation. The agency also has been sued by the state Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, which is seeking information about the deaths of Wiseman and five inmates who committed suicide in prison. Another estate settled a similar lawsuit for $2.9 million over the death of Timothy Perry at the Hartford Correctional Center in 1999. |
