Police were questioning acquaintances of a convicted killer who escaped from the Adams County Jail, but investigators said they did not know where he was. 'He could be at the Burger King in Brighton, or he could be in Cheyenne (Wyo.), ' Adams County sheriff's Sgt. Michael McIntosh said last week. Henry Corral, 22 , was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in the fatal stabbing of a Fort Morgan man. He and three other inmates escaped from an open-air exercise area on November 20, climbing from a basketball hoop to a loudspeaker and over a 21/2-story wall. Sheriff's Lt. Clint Tweden said they used a saw made from a towel rod to cut through wire mesh atop the wall, crossed a roof and lowered themselves with towels or sheets. They climbed over a wire fence to a street. Officers can see the exercise area from a high window, but the inmates were obscured from view once they reached the upper wall. Their absence was not immediately apparent because other prisoners remained in the yard, officials said. Sheriff Bill Shearer said he will appoint a board of inquiry made up of officers from Arapahoe and El Paso counties, as well as local officers. Corral was charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the July 2000 slaying of Charles Abreo. Relatives of Abreo and another man, who was wounded in the fight, have been notified of the escape. The recaptured prisoners are Robert Padilla, 35, convicted of murder; Arturo Hernandez, 23, awaiting trial on a murder charge; and David Delgado, 21, awaiting trial on charges of attempted murder, robbery and probation violation. 'Many of his statements are delusional and incredible,' Hoskins said. Hanify is to appear in Denver County Court today. |
