Three Recent Deaths at Worcester County, Mass., Jail

Three inmates have died in less than two months at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction, but officials say security changes are unnecessary.
Joseph J. Collier III, 46, of Clinton, died last Friday at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after an officer found him hanging from a bedsheet in his cell at 1:30 a.m.
A security check was conducted at 12:45 a.m., Deputy Jail Superintendent William E. Frisch told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester.
''It was 45 minutes later when they made the next tour,'' Frisch said, noting that suicide is hard to prevent. ''They can do it if they want to do it, especially a general population inmate. Four or five minutes, and that's the end of the ballgame.''
Collier was awaiting trial since Nov. 15 on motor vehicle charges and carrying a dangerous weapon. State Police assigned to the Worcester district attorney's office are investigating.
Frisch said investigations of the previous two deaths found no wrongdoing on behalf of jail personnel.
On Nov. 13, Jose Luis Medina, 31, of Worcester, was found unresponsive in his cell and died shortly afterward. He was serving a two-year sentence for assault and gun possession.
Officers were conducting a routine shakedown, Frisch said, after breakfast on the day Medina was discovered.
Clement A. Green, 45, died Oct. 7. He went into cardiac arrest more than two hours after checking into the hospital. Family members said Green should have been taken to the hospital earlier in the day.
Green, who was diabetic and had heart disease, complained all day at the jail that he was feeling sick. But jail officials said Green did not mention chest pains when he was treated at the jail clinic. He was awaiting trial on drug charges.
