Two inmates being held on burglary charges in the Jefferson County Jail escaped but were back in custody a short time later, after being reapprehended by Jefferson County Sheriff officials. Michael Jacobitz, 22, and Ty Sullivan, 23, overpowered a jailer around 8:30 a.m. on November 19 and took her car keys, fleeing the jail in the jailer's car. The jailer managed to free herself and notify the county sheriff and the Fairbury Police Department. Descriptions of the stolen jailer's car went out and shortly thereafter, both Sheriff Rex Southwick and Chief Deputy Nels L. Sorensen observed the vehicle northbound on Nebraska Highway 15. Employing a rolling roadblock, Sorensen and Southwick impeded the suspects' passage. The car containing Jacobitz and Sullivan rammed the patrol vehicle and went into a ditch. The two then tried to flee on foot, but were stopped by Sorensen and Southwick. Multiple charges in the jailbreak are pending against the escapees. They were transferred to the Nebraska Department of Corrections Diagnostic and Evaluation Center in Lincoln. |
