Eight Inmates Dead in Mexican Border Prison
By Associated Press
Published: 03/13/2006

At least eight inmates were killed and about 10 others injured on Saturday in a fight between gang members inside the municipal prison in the rough border Mexico city of Ciudad Juarez.

The fight involved rival factions of a single gang, the “Aztecas,” either because of internal leadership disputes, or for control of the drug trade, local media reported.

In December, six inmates were stabbed or beaten to death at the same prison — which is located across the border from El Paso, Texas — in a clash between the Aztecas and a rival gang known as The Mexicles.

Saturday's fight started early in the morning and was controlled by police using tear gas, city officials said.

Officials gave no immediate information on the condition of the wounded, who included nine prisoners and one officer.
