A New York prison inmate has been acquitted by jurors of manslaughter and assault in the killing of another prisoner 10 years ago in a fight at Auburn Correction Facility. Virgil Owens, now 37, was accused of killing of 40-year-old Shane Hotmer in 1996. Four inmates testified during the trial. Defense attorney Michael Bass says that in the end, those accounts "were just too inconsistent." Owens is serving a life sentence for 1996 convictions for second-degree murder, as well as robbery, assault and weapon possession at Great Meadows Correctional Facility. |
