Michigan prison officials say they're encouraged by the early results of a pilot program aimed at reducing the number of ex-convicts who end up back behind bars. Eight areas are testing the program now, and another eight sites will be added this year. The goal is to plan and deliver services intended to increase a released prisoner's chance of staying crime-free. About 48 percent of parolees return to prison within two years of their release. So far, 709 people have been in the re-entry program since its April 2005 launch. About three percent have returned to prison, with an additional 14 percent facing discipline for new violations. |
