A former officer at Ohio's only youth prison for girls, one of 12 corrections officers accused of a range of crimes, has been convicted of assaulting an inmate. Stanley Gates, 38, of Columbus, could face up to a year in jail when he is sentenced in April in Delaware County Common Pleas Court. He entered an Alford plea late this week to charges of assault and falsification, which means he denied guilt but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him. Gates was fired from his job at the Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility in May 2004. Assistant Prosecutor Paul Scarsella said Gates struck an inmate, puncturing her eardrum, then gave false information to investigators. |
